This is an absolute minefield as there can be over 30 companies involved from estate agents to legal companies, surveyors, financial institutions, removal companies, let alone all the change of addresses required!
 
Ideally, early in the offer acceptance stage, agree a date to work towards for exchange and completion.  If you are buying and selling through an estate agent who has agreed to ‘progress’ the purchase/sale of your property, they can save you a lot of time and hassle by chasing everyone involved.

Keep track of what should have been done every week and call your legal company, mortgage company and the estate agent (and surveyor until you get their report) once a week to ask how the case is going. Never go on holiday during this time!
